This 1980 Honda XL500S had a broken kickstarter shaft when I bought it. To fix it, I pulled off the right hand crankcase cover and welded on a 3 inch long piece of 3/4inch hardened steel bar. Then I ground and filed the bar until the rubber kickstart shaft seal slid over it. I welded up a special piece to fit over the shaft, and to bolt my kickstarter to. Next I drilled three 3/16ths inch holes through the piece, and shaft, and snapped in three 3/16ths inch pins (made from harrow tines) with ends bent to clip over the outside. So far it has worked very well, and beats trying to push start it!
