My present bike is now a 1976 Honda XL175.
I turned a heap rusted junker into a daily driver for 200 bucks and lots of EBay parts since I can't get a loan for a new bike that is really a piece of junk..:)
Total: $1300 for EBay parts, new tires, battery, points, coil, seat, carb, exhaust, new cables..etc. MSRP for the Honda XL175 in my sophmore year in high school, 1976 was $970.00. The XL175 is not perfect, underpowered in windy conditions, but climbs hills and runs cream-puff perfect.
Original miles on the XL175 was 2391 on the odometer. Bike sat for a LONG time, but interior of engine was pristine, with new gaskets it's basically a low-miles 35 year old bike. No payments to a bank, no credit, no BS....took me 7 months to buy all the parts each month looking for the lowest price parts on EBay.
The 1984 Honda Aero 50 scooter is kaput and now is somewhere in San Francisco, CA. Picked it up used, cheap, and it looked like hell. Updates include new roller weights, drive belt, racing CDI, new carb, and adjustable damper shock.
My top end after mods went from 35 to about 40mph.
The dragon logo is the latest look of the bike. The Japanese text in front says "Fujiwara Tofu Ten (SHOP)." I got this idea from the movie "Initial D", about Japanese kids drift racing in Akina, Japan.
The symbols in the rear above the tail light is "HONDA" in Japanese.
I got about 70-80 miles per gallon. I put nearly 5000 miles on it before it started to really fall apart. It was cool while it lasted.
